What in the multiverse is Sony doing?
Updated: Oct 29, 2020
You may have probably seen the recent rumors surrounding the next Spider-Man movie, from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield both reprising their roles as Spider-Man, as well as Jamie Foxx's confirming he would be returning as Electro, and if true the most telling rumor is that Emma Stone could be in contract negotiations. Sony is looking to make this film big and use it to branch off into new Sony films/TV shows based on different characters the studio owns. (If you may not have known, Sony owns all film rights to Spider-Man characters including heroes and it's villains). With that being said let's also not forget that around this time last year Marvel and Sony came to an agreement to extend the rights to using Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the MCU, full details unknown. Out of this deal came rumors of more cross studio sharing of Sony's characters to the MCU but also Marvel's characters to appear in Sony’s Universe of Marvel characters films as well (I know it is a mouthful). Since Benedict Cumberbatch is reprising his role as Dr. Stephen Strange and with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige co-producing the film this will be all MCU canon and will likely be taking place at least after Wandavision and before (but could be after) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Spider-Man following Far From Home
Before we go full Spider-verse, and we get our hopes up too much we have to consider that the film is set to begin late October/Early November. The rumors of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire seem to be a little too late in the process to see them have a large role in the movie or maybe part of the film was rewritten for it but just remember this is still Tom Holland's film. With Far From Home end credits we saw Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio revealing for the first time Spider-Man's identity to the world. Rumors began pouring out that Kraven the Hunter would be coming after Spider-Man for the sequel but a year later it seems more likely that Sony would rather develop the character in his own capacity first before pursuing Spiderman whether that's in his movie or making an appearance in another Sony property (perhaps Morbius?).
The Sinister Six
Seeing as how one of the post-credit scenes in Far From Home showed Scorpion confronting Michael Keaton's Vulture about Spider-Man. Considering Sony has wanted to do a movie based on the Sinister Six since 2013, they may finally have figure out a way following this movie presumably getting a slightly different Six.
This movie could be more of a recruited team up movie with Scorpion, Vulture, Mysterio, Shocker, then you have two others to pick from such as Electro (Jamie Foxx has already confirmed he will at least be making a cameo). Other choices include Tinkerer (I know he's in Homecoming but we want better), Sandman, Rhino, Chameleon, Kraven, The Lizard, Doc Ock, The Prowler (my personal favorite choice). Or the biggest name not mentioned yet, the person who could and would recruit all of them in the first place none other than Norman Osborn AKA Green Goblin. Keep in mind that in the MCU has only hinted at Osborn thus far and this could be for separating it from the other Spidey films, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't exist in the MCU just more of when. It's still very possible to have Harry as his childhood best friend and Peter met Ned in High School so don't worry Ned's not going anywhere.
A way this can work would be to have Norman Osborn become the newest elected Mayor of the city and want to show love for the hero and offers his home as shelter and sanctuary. Norman Osborn's true goal is to make more spider men though and he succumbs to becoming the Green Goblin demolishes his own home in pursuit of Peter who then escapes. Osborn furious hires the other villains and creates the Sinister Six to take over New York. The specific six villains play a large role in how the movie plays out but it likely will end with a villain or two switching sides (most likely Vulture).
Other Spider Webs to Explore
So what are some other plot ideas and premises we could see in this movie? Considering how Peter Parker was given EDITH and his identity known to the world, it's more than likely Nick Fury (if he's even on Earth) and Shield will want to keep a closer eye on him. Considering Nicky Fury and Peter Parker have yet to meet this is the best time to finally have that encounter. When you consider Disney's 2012 run of The Ultimate Spider-Man showcased this idea where Peter Parker was recruited by Nick Fury and Shield to lead a team of young heroes consisting of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, White Tiger, and Nova.
As the show progressed Peter Parker even began training a whole bunch of Spider heroes as well such as Agent Venom, Iron Spider, Miles Morales, etc. This could be the angle that the MCU wants to utilize in using Tom Holland's Spider-Man as the leader of the Young Avengers in a future film or TV Show. This movie's post-credits scene could end with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man popping up and saying we need your help. With that being said let's get into the Spider-Verse.
Home Away from Home
Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in December 2018, it was a huge success grossing over $375 million worldwide not only that it was critically acclaimed, taking home multiple best animated film of the year awards. Sony is looking to capitalize on this success as they inked the brilliant minds of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to a 5 year deal that consists of a variety of Sony projects in different capacities, with the only specific one they cited was a Silk TV show (more on her later). Whether they use that momentum for this Spider-Man film or for the fourth film, let's speculate where the Spider-Verse plot could begin based on Far From Home. Considering Happy Hogan's new role to Peter and Aunt May he will likely be helping keep them safe, but it is only a matter of time until Spider-Man has to do what is right and protect the people even if he is wanted. It could be Norman Osborne is trying to bring back his late wife, or even recruiting Peter's help by saying Harry Osborne is missing/sick; or it could get start getting very strange for Peter Parker. Spider-Man accidently finds himself swinging into a building pursuing a thief or fleeing a helicopter pursuit, his spider sense activating and he swings into what appears to be a building one second and the next second, he finds himself inside the home of Dr. Stephen Strange. Assuming Dr. Strange is off trying to repair the multiverse, Peter wanders around until he finds a portal that he can't help but be drawn to and seeing a different multiverse (as teased in Far From Home), he touches it sending him into the Multiverse.
More than likely Spider-Man would wind up in Tobey Maguire's universe first. As Peter begins swinging towards his home only to see that things look different and arriving home, he swings into his room and notices it's a child's bedroom now and Tobey Maguire's Peter walks in. He explains how he is now retired from the life of fighting crime so he can focus on his own personal life. Eventually the plot pushes them to proceed onto Andrew Garfield's multiverse who would a depressed and feeling remorseful for the death of Gwen Stacy. Seeing these two other Peter Parker's in different times in their life allows him to see that there has to and always will be a Spider-Man and all three recollect on the the words they hold dear to their core "With great power there must also come great responsibility." They continue on to recruit as many Spider-Man as possible lead up to defeating the villain Morlun. Morlun was created in 2014 and without going into full detail he's basically a vampire for Spider-Man powers. With recent rumors suggesting that Tobey Maguire's Spiderman would die (or at least seemingly dead) at the end of this movie. This is more likely continuing into another movie because it seems unlikely they kill off a Spider-Man.
This also gives a great chance to introduce multiple other Spider related heroes for Sony by giving them small cameos in different universes and see what the fans clamor for. I can see definitely utilizing the most popular characters in the next couple years Ghost Spider AKA Spider Gwen to Doc Ock's Superior Spider-Man, Black Cat and Silver Sable. Most importantly Miles Morales who will undoubtedly get his own live-action movie at some point, but what if the first time we see Miles Morales is not as the one we all know and love but in Marvel Comic's 616 universe he's a villain known as Ultimatum. So when Tom Holland eventually returns to his universe to become Miles Morales mentor in the MCU. This is the branch off that Sony Studios needs to be successful by capitalizing off the hot marvel properties much like they did with Venom, including other Spider Heroes in smaller projects from Ghost Spider AKA Spider-Gwen, Silk, Iron Spider, Anya Corazon, Madame Web, Spider-Man 2099.
Spider-Man is Marvel's most iconic character and especially following the event of Far From Home Tom Holland's Spider Man is set to take a more meaningful role in the MCU. Considering we still don't know the details of the Marvel-Sony deal it signifies this is only the beginning of Sony and the MCU sharing different characters. No more restrictions for the MCU from using any character they want to capitalize means we get better stories and more crossovers in general so it's a win-win on both sides and mainly for us fans. Not to mention with all the Sony projects based on Spider-Man characters we're no doubt looking at some Avenger sized Spider-Man mash-up movies and my inner Nerd cannot wait to see it play out.
