How the Multiverse of Madness will create Mutants, the Illuminati and set up various spin-offs

Updated: Feb 16

Dr. Strange 2: The Multiverse of Madness is set to release later this year on May 6, 2022, directed by Sam Raimi. The movie genre has been title as a supernatural action-adventure movie that is rumored to have numerous cameos as Dr. Strange explores the multiverse.

What we know so far:

We know that Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo and Benedict Wong as Wong are all set to reprise theirs roles from the first movie and as well as Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch will be a major part of the film, as well. Paul Bettany has been rumored to make an appearance so we could see the return of Vision/White Vision whether this is an alternate universe remains to be seen. Considering what Wanda just experienced in Wandavision one has to wonder if at some point during her travels will she see a universe in which her son's were born and Vision is still alive. If that is to be the case an not just an illusion she could uncover a way to restore Vision. It's likely Shuma Gorath uses this to manipulate her as a part of his plans if we see an evil Wanda appear

Shuma Gorath is one of the Elder Gods/Old Ones/ Many-Angled Ones which are extra dimensional demonic entities that existed long before the universe was born. They are believed to originate from an area called the Outer Dark which is best described as beyond Reality itself; by some he is considered to be Marvel's version of Cthulhu. Shuma Gorath is a primal power of chaos and one of the strongest entities in the universe, he is virtually unkillable and can destroy realities with energy balls he fires from his eye or his tentacles. Shuma Gorath has the ability to communicate, influence and even control others within his vicinity and across dimensional barriers. This seems how he will manipulate Wanda if she does end up becoming partially villain in the film as the rumors say. It's also possible that we could see a What-If... tie-in and Shuma Gorath manifests a physical form by absorbing the evil Dr. Strange.

"Before all was, I was. Before time was, I waited. I fed on the screaming souls of the universes. I drank the spoiled milk of dead stars. I am the emptiness outside all understanding. I am Shuma-Gorath."

America Chavez AKA Miss America will be making her live-action debut in the MCU and will be portrayed by Xochitl Gomez. America Chavez has Superhuman speed, strength, durability, flight, invulnerability, the ability to create star blasts and star portals as well as time and inter-dimensional travel so it will be fascinating to see how (and which of) her powers she's able to use.

She received these powers as a result of being raised in a Utopian Parallel, a dimension that exists outside of time and in the presence of the Demiurge. {The Demiurge is a sentient life force of Earth's biosphere who constructed Earth with 'pieces' of its own life essence, he also created the "Old Ones or Elder Gods" such as Shuma Gorath and Chthon who then inhabit the Earth and eventually the elder gods Atum and Khonshu replace the "Old Ones" by sealing them away}. It seems likely that Shuma Gorath attempts to consume Chavez's and her home but her mother's sacrifice themselves to save her. It's likely she is on the run when she runs into Dr. Strange and he attempts to protect/save Miss America from Shuma Gorath.

X-Men:

Over the past year we have heard numerous rumors of who may appear in this film as Dr. Strange and company travel across the Multiverse. We've had heard that Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is all but confirmed but we could also see Jean Grey, Iceman, Storm, Cyclops, etc, could appear. We could see X-Men from the later trilogy as well but by far the most interesting character we could hope to see is Deadpool and if this is how he makes the jump into the MCU. Another big questions is whether we will see Hugh Jackman's Wolverine appear because reports Marvel has been doing extensive reshoots for the film to refine it, but also to add more cameos. The reshoots were taking place in New York around the same time Jackman was there for previews/rehearsals for his leading role in Broadways' Music Man. Given that information Jackman could return as Wolverine for a few scenes but Jackman has consistently denied returning despite Ryan Reynolds continuous push for him to join a Deadpool movie. Another recent rumor that surfaced was that Avenger's Secret Wars is in early development and will consist of three films all filmed back to back. If Jackman is still turning down returning as Wolverine for any of these films it's more than likely Marvel Studios will be looking sooner rather then later for a new actor to play Wolverine and we could very well see him make an appearance in Multiverse of Madness.

Spider-Man:

If you haven't seen No Way Home yet then maybe skip this paragraph. Recent rumors have been stating that Tobey Maguire will be making an appearance as well and following Dr. Strange's spell he and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man was returned to their universe. The first spell brought everyone who knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man to the MCU's universe, subsequently spell that sent them back was because everyone forget Peter Parker was Spider-Man. What if, instead of sending them back to their universe (because they are both Peter and Spider-Man so they know who they are) it sent them to a random universe where Peter Parker nor Spider-Man existed, thus Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man was sent X-Men universe as mentioned above. An alternative possibility is Dr. Strange ends up in Spider-Man's timeline, he is still aware of who Spider-Man is but not of his identity and so he enlists his aide in the final battle and possibly is even a member of the Multiverse Illuminati team. As for Andrew Garfield's Peter (who we recently heard has signed a deal with Sony to return in numerous projects), could have been sent to Earth-65. In that universe Peter Parker became the Lizard had recently died after battling that universes Spider hero Gwen Stacy (AKA Spider-Gwen AKA Spider-Ghost AKA Spider-Woman) and thus giving the perfect jumping offpoint for Olivia Wilde's upcoming Spider-Woman movie. Ultimately the main problem with having Spider-Man appear is Marvel would have to ask Sony if they could use Spider-Man (or use their trade chip rights since Strange was in No Way Home) and it would ultimately be a small cameo but Maguire was in NYC filming for his upcoming role in Extrapolations so who knows maybe he stuck around for the Multiverse of Madness.

Iron Man:

Unfortunately we'll probably never see Robert Downey Jr. return as Iron Man but that doesn't necessarily mean we will never see Tony Stark again. Recent rumors has been suggesting that Tom Cruise may appear in the film as a variant of Tony Stark from another universe. This actually somewhat of a resurfacing rumor because about a year ago there was clamor that we would see an alternative Avenger's team in the movie. Tom Cruise's upcoming film schedule is Top Gun and Mission Impossible movies (at least that's public) if he isn't making a cameo as Stark in this film perhaps Marvel's testing the hype and in actuality they were asking him about appearing in Secret Wars.

The Defender's (from Netflix):

Given that we have seen Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock in No Way Home as well as Vincent D'Ornofio's Kingpin appear in Hawkeye, it confirms the Netflix characters do exist in the MCU but the caveat here is that their stories we saw on Netflix could be from that of a different universe. If that is to be the case then we could see Daredevil, Jon Bernthal's Punisher, Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones or Mike Colter's Luke Cage make an appearence in the Multiverse of Madness especially considering the reshoots are in New York. Although this seems unlikely that Marvel will bring all of these actors back to play their respective characters it's still possible we will see at least one based on two recent rumors/reports. First being that Cox's Daredevil will be appearing a lot in the MCU and second Marvel asked Ben Affleck if he would return as Daredevil for the film. Although it seems unlikely Affleck would do the cameo, we can still hope to see Cox's Daredevil alongside the other Defenders.

Ghost Rider:

It was reported that Ghost Rider will be making his official MCU appearence in the film, before going on to appear in other movies or Disney+ series. Although there have been no rumors of Nicholas Cage (Johnny Blaze) nor Gabriel Luna (Robbie Reyes) returning to play their versions of the character it's possible they have been keeping this one under wraps. If that shows to not be the case we could see see Danny Ketch's Ghost Rider in the film (hopefully fighting) Dr. Strange. Recent rumors suggest that Norman Reedus has signed on to play Ghost Rider. Which would lead us to Dr. Strange 3: The Midnight Sons (or Midnight Sons as it's own movie), where Dr. Strange is tracking down the Spirit of Vengence in his own universe and thus giving us Alejandra Jones as the MCU's Ghost Rider (rather than Blaze, Ketch, or Reyes). If Midnight Sons does play out like we could see a team consisting of Mahershala Ali's Blade, Kit Harrington's Black Knight, Oscar Issac's Moon Knight, Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff (or Xochitl Gomez's Miss America) and hopefully Jon Bernthal's Punisher.

Fantastic Four:

Fans have been clamoring around the rumors that John Krasinki might be playing Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic and for his wife Emily Blunt to play Ms. Fantastic AKA Susan Storm. The MCU's version of Fantastic Four is set to arrive at some point in 2023 and will be directed by Jon Watts, who also directed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. Since the Illuminati are rumored to appear in the film it would make sense for Krasinski to appear but if that was the case he would ultimately be limited to one movie since he was from a different multiverse.

Personally I would prefer Marvel to look for a younger cast for the Fantastic Four movie because Reed Richards is considered one of the smartest individuals in the Marvel Universe so it would beg the question why he wasn't involved in saving the world. That is unless of course, Nick Fury had already recruited him and he is an active member of SHIELD. I believe it would make more more sense to have the four as recent College Graduates testing out the limits of their Fantasticar as they bring it into Space. The test goes great until the blip happens and all 4 mysteriously blip away for 5 years and they suddenly reappear as they are hit by a cosmic storm giving them their respective powers.

Illuminati:

The Multiverse of Madness is rumored to bring in the Illuminati to the big screen, created in 2005 it featured some of the brightest minds in the Marvel universe with Tony Stark, Professor Xavier, Dr. Strange, Black Bolt, Namor, Mister Fantastic and later Black Panther was added. Since the movie promises it will be a multiverse adventure its likely that Dr. Strange will bring together the Illuminati from different universes to defeat his evil counterpart and/or Wanda. The team could consist of characters from different multiverses with Dr. Strange leading a team of Professor X, Blackbolt, Tony Stark, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Mister Fantastic.

Loki?:

In the trailer for the film, it shows Wanda opening a door to what appears to be the same type of door that the TVA uses to travel to various points. It's also been rumored that Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), and Mobius (Owen Wilson) will all be making an appearence. Considering Season 2 of Loki is about to begin filming in February (in the UK) it's entirely likely Dr. Strange runs into them especially since the multiverse exists again because of Sylvie so it would only make sense for them to explain everything that happened in Season 1 to Dr. Strange illuminating the next major threat to the MCU. Then followed by the post-credits scene we would see Dr. Strange holding a meeting for the members of MCU's Illuminati.

The main question here is what type of Illuminati team would Dr. Strange form? Would it be like in the comics where the world's greatest minds come together as decision makers to formulate a plan vs. Kang or would it be styled more as a task force to deal with extraordinary events. Let us know what you think and which cameo's you are hoping to see in the upcoming film! Here's my guess if Marvel does decide to make an Illuminati movie.

Illuminati (as decision makers) -

1. Dr. Strange

2. Hank Pym

3. Bruce Banner

4. Professor X

5. Namor

6 & 7. Nick Fury; but since Nick Fury is still off-world he sends Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom in his place.

Professor Xavier's inclusion would imply that either Mutants have always existed in the MCU and Professor Xavier has been erasing the idea of mutants from everyone's minds or Wanda is catalyst and pulls a reverse House of M (creating Mutants in the MCU).

MCU's Illuminati (as a strike force):

1. Dr. Strange

2. Bruce Banner

3. Namor

4. America Chavez

5. Wanda Maximoff

6. Vision (the idea is that America and Wanda combine their powers in a way to convert White Vision back into Vision)
